New Cancer Center Opened in January 2010

A new door to hope opened in January 2010 with the unveiling of the new St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center at St. Mary's Hospital.  This state-of-the-art facility focuses on delivering hope to patients through the latest medical technology, cutting-edge cancer research, integrated treatment options and access to specialists Green Bay has trusted for decades - Green Bay Oncology, Ltd. and Radiation Oncology Specialists, SC.

The expansion began in the fall of 2007; the 117,000-square foot addition is topped off with a third floor living roof garden that is the largest green roof in Wisconsin.  Patients will experience a private entrance for cancer care, electronic medical records for medical and radiation oncology plus private communication systems for staff consults.  This warm and spiritual atmosphere includes 2,400 square feet of ground level healing gardens and water features in addition to the 22,000-square foot living roof with walking paths for patients and families to rest and reflect.

State-of-the-art equipment includes a CT simulator, 3D imagery for dosimetry, a Trilogy linear accelerator and chemotherapy treatment area with private and semi-private options.  The expansion was built with the environment in mind.  It maximizes use of daylight, 90 percent of rainwater is recycled as irrigation and all storm water passes through a bio-filtration system to purify runoff water.  Water-saver technology is used throughout the building and materials are low-PVC or PVC-free with natural finishes of wood and stone.  Energy-efficient heating and cooling was installed with heat reclamation devices in place.  More than 88 percent of construction materials were recycled into 14 idfferent waste streams.

Why a new facility?
The demand for services of cancer in Northeastern Wisconsin has been rising, and will continue to grow with the aging of the large baby boomer generation. In addition, there is an increased need for cancer treatment because we are identifying cancer at earlier stages due to better diagnostic technology.  Better cancer treatments make it possible to treat more types of cancer.as a result  more people are living with and beyond cancer.

The new location will provide patients and their families the array of cancer services currently available at the St. Vincent site, including:
• Advanced technology and equipment
• Diagnosis
• Treatment
• Screenings
• Education
• Prevention
• Research
• Pastoral care
• Psychosocial support
• Nutritional services
• Cancer care coordination
• Integrative therapy
• Financial assistance

The center will be on the first floor of St. Mary’s and will include radiation oncology services staffed by Radiation Oncology Specialists, and a medical oncology clinic staffed by Green Bay Oncology. It will provide a patient friendly  space for the two physician groups to collaboratively care for patients.
